Bringing back lost art

We made clay tiles in a great workshop on Thursday making tiles based on artist Gilbert Bayes’ work for St Pancras Housing. Gilbert Bayes created ‘finials’ for drying posts used for hanging washing…but over 160 have gone missing. The results will be fired and brought back to the museum for a display. CSM ceramics students and our group worked together.

Bayes included ships, tailors and wyverns in his work. Students created the tile designs based on these motifs and some blank tiles which were painted by locals over tea and samosas.

Here are the early works.
